Our final day in the Innsbruck/Tyrol area was full of hiking and exploration. Aaron had mentioned a few months before our trip that he was interested in Alpine Sliders (I had never heard of them) but when we realized Imst had one we just HAD to go.
Imst was about a 1.5 hour drive from Innsbruck and the drive up the mountain in Imst might make it difficult to access by bus. I am SO glad we have a car on this trip. If you plan to rent a car for a tour around Austria, you might just rent one on Munich like we did and cross the border. It turned out to be about $400 cheaper for a month!
It cost about $24 each for the chair lift up the mountain and for the coaster ride down. We opted for a chair lift up, a long hike at the top, and then a coaster ride down. I can tell you, it was worth every penny.

Imst Alpine Coaster
Then it came time to actually take the coaster down. The coaster track actually goes 11,597 feet, a 1,600 foot drop in altitude. You have control over the speed, which can get up to 60 mph in some areas. Unfortunately, cameras were not allowed on the coaster but I did snap a few photos before. Aaron also captured some video on the way down, check out his vlog (linked below).
It was a blast!
St. Anton An Alberg
This looks like a sleepy ski town, but I can see that it would be bustling in the winter! The thing is, we arrived in this town around 3pm and there was nothing open but a grocery store. We had planned to stop here for lunch after the alpine coaster, but there was nothing open! It was still a picturesque Austrian ski town. We ended up ravaging a grocery store and sitting on a lawn for lunch instead. We then had a 2 hour drive back on the A12 to Innsbruck. Regardless, it was lovely.
Our Final Night In Innsbruck
Our final night in Innsbruck was full of surprises. We went back to the the city center where we had dinner and “shopped”for a few souvenirs… tough I wasn’t actually able to buy any. I literally had 10 postcards and a scarf in my hand when I heard “Elizabeth! Get out here!” I dropped everything in the store and ran outside. If you haven’t received a postcard yet, this is why… an entire parade of Tyrolean band members and folk dancers showed up to give us a show! It was awesome to finally see some classic Tyrolean dancing!
